Truck Box: The Best Way to Organize Your Pickup Truck
So you have a great pickup truck. The question is, do you want to dress it for business or
pleasure? Why not both? With a sturdy truck box you can control your tools, sport equipment or anything else you
need to lock away for organization and safety.
The defining thing about a truck box is what you plan to put in it. It is
not as simple as buying plywood, screws, a hasp and some paint any more. With today’s beautifully crafted pickups
and the great heavy duty work horses of the pickup world, you must define what you want your truck tool boxes to do
for you. There are truck boxes that stretch across the back of the truck under the rear window. Or the saddlebag
boxes that straddle the wheel wells. There are tool boxes that hang off the sides or undersides of the truck. You
need to be sure what you want your truck to look like when you finish. Remember, there is no law that states you
have to do everything at once – step by step works just fine when working with a budget.

Truck boxes come in heavy aluminum stamped in diamond designs (gladiator type), stainless steel,
black powder-coated metal or heavy duty plastic boxes. You can even get a pink truck box if you want. The point is
that you can have nearly any color, any style of truck box for your pickup.

There are short boxes, so that if you are pulling a 5th Wheel, the toolbox will not interfere
with the front part of the 5th wheel. This style was designed to avoid the costly damage that can occur to the
front end of the 5th wheel during sharp turns made to park or to pull into a camping space.

There are gull wing boxes that you can open up from either side of the truck while standing on the ground (you need
to be fairly tall or have a running board upon which to stand!) Anyway, it is convenient to be able to open either
side and be able to see and find the whatever-you-are-going-for.

Other types open the lid from the center of the lip facing the truck tailgate. This gives you ample space as well
as viewing capability. Built-in lights in the lid will help if you find yourself digging through the box in the
early morning, at twilight or after sunset.
But it is the locking mechanism that will be the telling point on your tool box. Your box can
hold anything from tools to a young one’s most precious toys for that family camping trip. So pay attention to
how the box is locked. There is nothing wrong with a padlock or combination lock to lock some of the boxes; but
remember what a bolt cutter is designed to do!
Truck Accessories
Beyond the tool boxes, what other truck accessories do you want? There are running lights,
tonneau covers (hard, soft, tri-fold, rolling and other types); there are bedliners and headache racks. There are
ladder racks and truck caps. There are so many truck accessories available that it makes the head swim.
One of my favorites is Tonneau covers. In my opinion, they provide a great way to secure your
truck bed and the things that you pace in it. The locking systems that are available make your pickup nearly as
secure as closed in vehicle. So your long tools, groceries, whatever you have in the back of your truck are covered
up and hidden from view and locked away for the taking.
The most obvious of things that a tonneau cover provides, is a finished look to the bed. Your
truck is given the appearance of a complete smooth and secure truck. One that is well cared for and one in which
you take pride.
Dressing your truck is all a matter of your likes and dislikes. There are so many different
choices of truck boxes, that you can have your truck box be as unique as you are.
